Growing Your Own Peppers

Something else that we love doing at 800 Hot Sauce is growing our own peppers. There’s a real satisfaction that comes from nurturing a chilli plant from seed, harvesting the peppers, and making your very own hot sauce.

From how to germinate pepper seeds to knowing when your peppers are ready to harvest

we’ve got you covered for every step of your pepper-growing journey. Even if you’ve never grown anything before, you’ll find a ton of information on how to grow peppers successfully.

Even if you don’t have an outdoor space to grow them in, you can still raise a few pepper plants indoors using pots. You’ll even find information on the best size containers for growing peppers.

Once you’ve taken the plunge into growing your own peppers (and you’ve discovered just how easy it can be) there will be no turning back.

Of course, things can be a little bit ‘trial and error’ when it comes to growing your own peppers. But, again, we’re here to help you overcome any obstacle you might encounter along the way.

Perhaps you’ve noticed aphids on your peppers, curling leaves, or wilting plants? Or maybe you’d simply like to know how far apart you should plant your peppers? Whatever you need to know, you’ll find it all on 800 Hot Sauce.

But that’s not all! We’ve also got information on the best pepper plant companions for your garden, how to stake pepper plants, and how to prune them.

All of this information will help you grow the best peppers that you can turn into delicious hot sauce.

Cooking with Peppers

There’s no point in growing your own peppers if you’re never planning on using them. This is something else that we’re here to help with, and we’ve got loads of advice on cooking with your fresh chilies.

The first port of call when cooking with peppers is learning how to stop chili pepper burns on your hands and skin. Anybody that’s cooked with chilli peppers before or has tried making their own hot sauce knows the pain that comes with cutting chilli peppers and, the hotter they are, the more they burn! But, with a little sound advice, you can dodge this pain altogether!

We’ve also got some great advice on what you can use instead of certain chili peppers that a recipe might call for. Imagine for a moment that you need cayenne pepper. You head over to your spice rack only to find that you’ve totally run out. What do you do? Well, you can use one of 8 cayenne pepper alternatives instead!

You’ll also find substitutes for other peppers as well, including serrano peppers and jalapeno peppers

How to Store Chilli Peppers

While we fully endorse the idea of having hot sauce with every meal, there’s a chance that you’re going to have so many fresh chilies that you’re not quite sure what to do with. This is when you need to know how to store them correctly and, again, we’ve got the advice you’re after.

You have a few options here, too. If you’re planning on using your peppers pretty soon, you can store them in the refrigerator. There is some debate about this, but we can explain exactly why the refrigerator is the best place for them

You might also want to dehydrate your chilies to preserve them for longer, and we’ve got the ultimate guide on how to dehydrate your chilies at home.

Your final storage option is to freeze your chilies. Many people don’t know that this is something that you can do but it’s actually pretty straightforward. They also thaw super quickly and, most importantly, they don’t lose any of their heat or flavor.
